Chapter Twenty-One
Raegel
I stared at the black sky. The dragons rarely flew from the incubus castle since Ezekiel had been sent to the Earth realm three weeks ago. Normally the flames they blew into the sky gave some illumination in this perpetually dull world.
In that time heâd been gone, Iâd claimed Agatha as my own. There were times when I caught her watching me, and I knew she was upset with the way I tricked her into a mating. At the time, Iâd lost control. It was no excuse, just what happened. Sheâd run from me and when I saw Ophelia about to deal her a death blow, that was when all my reservations about our relationship disappeared. Agatha was mine and no one would take her from me.
I thought sheâd reveal what Iâd done to my father when I walked in as he explained about the bracelet. We werenât supposed to claim mates without them realising the level of the contract they were entering. Agatha probably would have refused me, so I claimed her like a barbarian because the thought of her walking away again was too much to bear.
âWhatâs wrong?â Her arms slipped around my waist and her head leaned on my bicep. She read my moods with a terrifying accuracy.
âI sense unrest in the kingdoms. Ophelia sends her wraiths to search for me since she cannot reach me here.â
âYou cannot be responsible for everyone, Raegel.â
I glanced down at her. She was dressed in elven clothes I brought back for her. Iâd finally allowed her to wash after our mating ritual. I preferred her naked, wearing only my secretions. Every day my witch became more beautiful, her curves stretching the soft fabric of our clothes in a way that tempted me to take her again.
âI can be responsible for my people and for you,â I replied, absently tucking her hair behind her ear.
She sighed and rested her head back on me again. âI will need to bring Ilana back from the Earth realm soon. Ophelia grows angry because she cannot sense Ezekiel anywhere in Purgatory. I only hope theyâve had enough time there.â
I turned to face her. âWhy did you send them to the Earth realm? Why not the pocket realm where the witches live?â
A smile curved her lips. âCross species cannot breed in Purgatory.â
I frowned. âI know this already.â
âHow do you think Ilana was conceived? Her mother is a witch and her father a vampire.â
My eyes widened. âYou meanâ¦â
âYes,â Agatha replied. âThe same rules do not apply in the Earth realm. To try and break the curse, we needed to add in a variable that Ophelia could not predict. An unnatural union.â
Iâd assumed that the witches had used powerful magic to allow their queen to conceive an heir.
âOphelia will not rest until she makes Ezekiel use his curse against the woman he loves,â Agatha continued. âA child will be the key that prevents that from happening and unlocks the curse.â
There were four of us cursed, so I didnât reply.
